WHO has just released the report of the 20th Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines, and recommends that misoprostol be listed on the Model List of Essential Medicines (EML) for the additional indication of treating PPH, when oxytocin is not available or cannot be used safely. This is welcome news as we know that while oxytocin is the gold standard for treating PPH, it is not always available or stored properly; this development will help to expand the range of available options to treat PPH.
